LOWER GAR RESTORATION -

Located on the lower end of the Iowa Great Lakes group, the Gar Lakes form a chain approximately two miles in length. Three lakes are included: Upper Gar Lake, Lake Minnewashta, and Lower Gar Lake. Comprising a total area of 405 acres, the Gar Lakes are generally more shallow and protected than other lakes in the group. Water clarity problems at Lower Gar, particularly algae and suspended sediment, limit aquatic life and general enjoyment of the lake. High nutrient concentrations, rough bottom fish, wind and boat action, and the shallow structure of the lake all work together to cause these current conditions.
